DISTENDER - DevelopIng STratEgies by integrating mitigatioN, aDaptation and participation to climate changE Risks aims to deliver integrated strategies by creating a methodological framework that guides the joint implementation of climate change (CC) adaptation and mitigation through participatory approaches. These approaches are to be supported by quantitative and qualitative analyses that clarify interactions, synergies, and trade-offs. Since effective climate responses should be context-specific, DISTENDER emphasises flexible, inclusive planning processes that engage all key stakeholders to ensure legitimate and meaningful action.
Through a facilitated participatory process, the project intends to develop multi-driver socio-economic-climate scenarios that combine bottom-up knowledge and locally relevant drivers with top-down information from Europe’s Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) and downscaled IPCC Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs). A cross-sectoral, multi-scale impact-assessment modelling toolkit is planned to analyse complex interactions across sectors and incorporate an economic evaluation framework in order to enable assessment of economic impacts, damage claim settlements, and shifts in sectoral activity under various scenarios, including indirect and cascading effects.
DISTENDER’s innovation lies in integrating three core concepts: cross-scale analysis, harmonisation across methods, and robustness checking. Its approach will be applied in a diverse set of European case studies - six core and five follower case - capturing a wide range of adaptation and mitigation challenges. All outcomes will feed into a Decision Support System offering guidelines, manuals, tools, and insights from the case studies.
